How it works

How do AI voice agents work?

An AI voice agent works by converting a caller's speech into text, deciding what to say back using a language model, and converting that response back into spoken audio, all within a fraction of a second, repeated for every exchange in the call.

Step one, hearing what's said

The moment the caller speaks, a speech to text system converts the audio into written words the AI can actually process. This step needs to be fast and accurate, since any delay here makes the whole conversation feel unnatural.

Step two, deciding how to respond

A language model, guided by instructions specific to that business and campaign, reads the transcribed text and decides how to respond, whether that's answering a question, asking a follow up, handling an objection, or moving toward booking a meeting.

Step three, speaking the response

The chosen response is converted into natural sounding speech using text to speech technology, and played back to the caller. The entire cycle, from hearing to responding, typically happens quickly enough that the conversation feels close to a real time exchange.

Frequently asked

A short pause is often intentional, mimicking natural conversational timing, though on a slower system it can also reflect processing delay.
